Rain, rain, please don't go away. I wouldn't mind if you stayed a couple of days!

(it decided to stop raining right as I took this picture but it was just POURING yesterday)

I'm sitting here thanking God right now as the sky pours forth it's healing nourishment onto our dry California ground. There has been a drought here for a while, I heard that people in LA weren't even allowed to get their cars washed because they were trying to conserve the little water they had. Well, now we can put that all behind us. The fields are now green again, the soft pitter-patter on the roof is like a lullaby, the air is cold outside but within our walls it's toasty warm, the leaves off the trees continue to fall, Christmas music is playing... And now all I want to do is sit in front of the fire with a cup of tea and travel back down memory lane...

The Faerie Ring (The Faerie Ring #1) - by Kiki Hamilton

Debut novelist Kiki Hamilton takes readers from the gritty slums and glittering ballrooms of Victorian London to the beguiling but menacing Otherworld of the Fey in this spellbinding tale of romance, suspense, and danger.

The year is 1871, and Tiki has been making a home for herself and her family of orphans in a deserted hideaway adjoining Charing Cross Station in central London. Their only means of survival is by picking pockets. One December night, Tiki steals a ring, and sets off a chain of events that could lead to all-out war with the Fey. For the ring belongs to Queen Victoria, and it binds the rulers of England and the realm of Faerie to peace. With the ring missing, a rebel group of faeries hopes to break the treaty with dark magic.

Unbeknownst to Tiki, she is being watched by Rieker, a fellow thief who suspects she is involved in the disappearance of the ring. Rieker has secrets of his own, and Tiki is not all that she appears to be. Her very existence haunts Prince Leopold, the Queen's son, who is driven to know more about the mysterious mark that encircles her wrist.

Prince, pauper, and thief--all must work together to secure the treaty...

5 out of 5 stars

Literally just finished this book about 15 minutes ago. And, normally when I write a book, (whether I loved it or not) I usually have some complaints about it--Some of the characters annoyed me, the romance was either dumb or too sexual, etc. But not for this book! I loved everything about it: the characters, writing, plot, setting, and romance.

So just get the book, read it, love it, swoon over a certain thief, and pretty much just read the entire thing in one sitting. That's what I did ;-)

Teaser Tuesday - Post #15

Here's something new! Every Tuesday I'm going to share with you a picture that showcases a moment from my book, Jazmine. Below it, I'll have a quote that is related to the picture. Hopefully this way ya'll will be able to get inside my head a little and see what Latanica is really like! None of these images (unless otherwise noted) are mine.

From THE LATANICA SAGA: JAZMINE --

As I looked out into the horizon, a black dot caught my attention. I strained my eyes to try and see it clearly. After a while it got closer and I was able to see that it was a ship. It looked very old, but I noticed that it was well built.  But it was the ship’s flag that caught my attention. It was jet-black, with a red raven. It fluttered and waved in the wind.

TOAM: The Maze Runner

**TOAM: thoughts on a movie

Wow. That's all I can say at the moment... This was one intense movie. I mean, I've seen intense movies before but for some reason this one was different. Maybe it's because it involved the ultimate survival of children/teenagers. Now, don't think this is another rehashing of the Hunger Games. It's far from it, actually, and (in my opinion) way better. Instead of teenagers and children put together to kill each other, this is more about putting teenagers and children together to help each other survive. There are the one's that are more violent and one's that question leadership of course, but the effort these boys put into to keep each other alive is amazing. Another thing that astounded me were the words of wisdom that would come out of some of these teenage boys. Some of the things they said really made my mouth drop.

On another note. The movie is really very well made in all aspects; script, acting, cinematography, special effects. I feel like the movie industry is taking a step forward in their production of these kinds of movies. The mystery in it is also something to keep you on your toes.

Overall, the whole movie kept me on the edge of my seat and I can't wait for the second one to come out next year.

Eon - by Allison Goodman

Swordplay, dragon magic--and a hero with a desperate secret

Twelve-year-old Eon has been in training for years. His intensive study of Dragon Magic, based on East Asian astrology, involves two kinds of skills: sword-work and magical aptitude. He and his master hope that he will be chosen as a Dragoneye--an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune.

But Eon has a dangerous secret. He is actually Eona, a sixteen-year-old girl who has been masquerading as a boy for the chance to become a Dragoneye. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic; if anyone discovers she has been hiding in plain sight, her death is assured.

When Eon's secret threatens to come to light, she and her allies are plunged into grave danger and a deadly struggle for the Imperial throne. Eon must find the strength and inner power to battle those who want to take her magic...and her life.

4.5 stars out of 5

The thing I loved most about this book is the time that Goodman took to create a culture that seemed real. She bases it off of Asian culture but it still has its own flavors. You have the upper and lower classes, the prejudice of the unwhole, degradation of woman, the warrior philosophies, and, of course, the reverence of the dragons. Like any real society; it's not perfect. You have the misery and the suffering, the politics and the ambitions of different people... Eon is no exception. Masquerading as a boy is difficult. But it is a small risk to pay to keep her identity as a deformed girl hidden. Eon is strong and determined which is something that I really annoyed about his/her character. Her journey as she strives to become a Dragoneye is expertly played as you really feel for her and her struggles... The other thing I loved about this book is that each character is different. The diverse personalities kept your interest as you came to love one character or hate another. Goodman's personalities weren't bland or just the same like so many other characters in different books I've read... The only thing I seemed to have trouble with were these characters that had the body of one sex but the soul of another. It was very strange and slightly repulsing for me to read about a woman who was actually a man. But besides that slight drawback, the book was an amazing read because... the dragons! Oh! I love dragons and Goodman's version of the Dragons and their Dragoneyes was so refreshing! But, instead of taking my word for it. Just get the book and read it yourself! You'll see what I mean... ;-)

My FanFiction Stories - Post #4

I have to admit... I didn't like The Hunger Games or the other two books that much. In fact I threw Mockingjay across the room when I finished because I was so mad. The Hunger Games was okay, it was interesting. I was reading about a new world, new characters, a new writing style. But it all went down-hill for me from there. My biggest issue(s) was Katniss (the protagonist), and the writing style. Which led to the thought: how would have I written The Hunger Games? And this story is the product of that idea.

Description: What if Katniss and Peeta hadn't been picked for the Games, but bitter orphan Terra Hunter and Capitol hater Gale Hawthorne? What horrors will they face in a Game where children fight to the death? What sacrifices will be made to keep those they care for safe? What love might be found amidst anger and betrayal?

Book: The Hunger Games

Characters: Terra Hunter (OC), Gale Hawthorne

Genre: Romance/Horror

Rating: M

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn...

So I'm sitting in front of my family's first fire of the season watching little Grass Valley's first rainfall of the season. California has been in a drought for a while now and it's such a blessing to watch the pitter-patter outside. I love fall, it's a time of sweaters and scarves, pumkin-spice coffee, colorful trees, long afternoons of reading, and... shivers and coughs. Yes, I'm currently pretty sick right now (please pray for me) and that means I'm not doing much school today... so do you know what that means?

OBITUARY FOR THE LATE MR. COMMON SENSE

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in and out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get Parental consent to administer Calpol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

(This has been passed around from profile to profile on fanfiction.net. It is sad, but oh, so true.)

Yes, I live on a farm...

So, yesterday I started harvesting our latest flock of meat chickens at 7:30am and didn't finish until 5:30pm (which is actually a record time). We had rented a trailer and had a few friends come over. Together, we harvested 195 chickens which we are now going to be selling at the local Farmer's Markets.

Enjoy the photos...

If you dare!

Haha!

WIP

WIP (Works in Progress)

Besides working on Destiny's Hand (book 2 in the Latanica Saga), I'm also working on several other writing projects. Four in fact. The first one I'm going to keep a surprise. But I will say that it will probably be available around the same time as Destiny's Hand, maybe a little before. The other three I have been writing for on and off (I like to switch things up so I don't get bored with doing just one project). It's slow going but I'm having a lot of fun with them. I have absolutely no idea when these three will be coming out but I just wanted to share with you all a little bit about my writing life. Between now and when they come out, I want to give you little bits and teasers every couple of months; maybe a picture that reminds me of the setting/characters or a line from the manuscript. For now, let's start with the names! ;-)

PHOENIX

The Latanica Saga World Map

Hey guys!

So I thought I'd take a second to share with you my latest piece of artwork... Which is the map of Geia! It took me a couple of days to complete; I would work on it during short bursts of time. First I had to figure out the Geography in my head, and then I started with the shape. It took me a while to get a shape that I liked and this is what I came up with! Next was just little details like islands, mountains, forests and rivers. I didn't think I'd be able to do it but I am so happy with the finished piece! Well, what do you guys think?

Done on plain sketch paper with an HB pencil and fine tipped sharpie.

A silver mirror shimmered into view beside her, the delicate glass rippling like a still lake.  She beckoned me to move toward her, but I stepped forward hesitantly.

I turned my head to take a quick peek in the mirror... and a strange girl stared back at me.

Thrust, block, sweep, duck, stab, parry, volley.  Over and over again we performed these moves like a rehearsed dance.  I felt like I was flying; weaving and ducking under and around Adrian’s sharp blade.

I looked down at my hands and visibly grimaced.  I still held the ivory handled dagger, and the goblin’s blood stained my hands and wrists, dried in clumps to my bare skin.  I looked up and noticed a clear blue spring bubbling merrily over a dam of boulders, so I walked over to it and sunk my hands into the cool silky wetness.  I watched as the blood fell from my hands and drifted in red-black swirls down the spring, carried by the gentle current.

TAC Summer Great Books Program

Hey Everyone!

I know, I know, I haven't posted anything in FOREVER! But I have an excuse. Three actually. One is that this summer has been crazy with finishing up school, work, and everything else. And two is that I just got back a little while ago from a two-week-long College Summer Program! And three is that my family is currently hosting a foreign exchange student from France!

Below I have a bunch of pictures illustrating my experience at the summer program and also of Loic. I hope you enjoy them!

One of the groups I was hanging out with! They were awesome and we had some good times together! First is Melissa, Caleb, Antonia, and Robert.

Too cool for school, ha! Caleb and Robert at the Getty Museum in LA.

Hollywood!

The second group I hung out with. We had some crazy laughs!

This is what I did when I was bored in class. Haha! What do you guys think? Would I make a good Henna artist? ;-)

My awesome roommate Rachel!

The third group I would hang out with! We had a blast playing cards! Extreme spoons is the best!

This was a hilarious parody our Prefects put on about the murder of Julius Ceaser.

Back at home. This is Loic Chantrel, the foreign exchange student who is currently living with us to learn more English. This was at the fair last week!

My brother Zach and Loic in a gift shop in Santa Cruz!

This was one of our favorite rides!

At the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz!

All right everyone. I hope you enjoyed those! I'm going to pick up my teaser tuesdays again next week and hopefully share a lot more stuff with you guys!

Enjoy your weekend :-)

Cheers!

My FanFiction Stories - Post #3

I wrote this short story after finishing the third book in Chris Bradford's Young Samurai series and before I realized that there was a fourth one after that… and a fifth one… and a sixth… Anyway, I LOVED the first three books but absolutely HATED the ending to the third one. Not going to say anything because of spoilers but… Because of the ending to the third one I wrote this short story, where Jack is finally reunited with his little sister...

Description: After seven years in Japan and battling the seas Jack Fletcher has returned home to England seeking his young sister Jess. But his welcome home isn't as sweet as he thought it would be.

Book: The Young Samurai Series

Characters: Jack Fletcher, Jess Fletcher, Mrs. Winter

Genre: Family

“Are you sure it’s safe?” I asked uncertainly.

“I have sailed it at least five times, Princess, and came out unharmed. I doubt this trip will be any different,” he replied sourly.

The Hittite Warrior - by Joanne Williamson

Judea has always been the crossroads and battlefield of contending nations. It is no less so in this biblical time of the Judges. Uriah Tarhund's Hittite home is destroyed by invading Greeks. His dying father tells him to go south to seek a Canaanite named Sisera. "He will help you. For my sake. . . ." Uriah is plunged into the tumult of an uneasy Judea. When he saves a young boy from being sacrificed to Moloch, he is given succor for a time by the Hebrews. Later, he finds Sisera and joins him in war against these same people. When the Canaanites are defeated, the young Hittite has the opportunity to come to peace with himself, the Hebrew people and their God.

5 stars

I first read this book back in middle school. I was young, and annoyed that I had to read a historical fiction book instead of a fantasy, and on top of that I had to write a report on it! Nah, just kidding, I liked writing reports. But that's not the point. This book is well written and really reaches out to that 9 - 13 years-old audience. It's history about a culture we don't know much about with a bible story thrown into the background. The story of Deborah. I had heard about this bible story but never knew much about it. The Hittite Warrior cleared that up for me. But the real story is about a young Hittite who has been hiding and on the run ever since his father was murdered before his eyes. It's an entertaining book filled with the drama of the time period, giving you glimpses into the world of the Hittites, Egyptians, and Israelites. You will learn many things from this book, especially about what it was like to be an Israelite hiding in the hills and of course the epic journey of Uriah. So I hope you join Uriah on his journey, your time will be well spent.

“If you don’t hurry up, slave, I’ll have Ax whip you so hard your grandchildren’s backs will bleed… if you live long enough to have some anyway,” she added, chuckling lightly as her unnerving eyes stared at me with a new bloodthirsty glint.

Dravia may be human, but sometimes she acted no less savage than the other monsters that roamed her father’s castle.

My FanFiction Stories - Post #2

The story idea for Earthling began to form after reading another FanFiction called From Earth to Star Wars. I really enjoyed it but was slightly disappointed in the writing and some of the changes they made to the Star Wars universe. So from there, my own idea began to take shape. And Earthling was born…

DescriptionRosalie Storm was just an ordinary girl from Earth; dating her best friend, getting good grades, training in martial arts. When one day her life is changed forever. Swept into a world she both loves and fears, Rosalie must fight to keep her identity, fight to become what she has only dreamed about, fight to stay alive... For in the galaxy far, far away, nothing is at it seems...

Movie: Star Wars

Characters: Rosalie Storm (OC), Cade Wolfsbane (OC), Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aayla Secura, Qui-Gon Jinn, Master Tholme, Yoda

I only got a quick glance at the beast before it rushed past, but I could never forget what I saw. Grey hair clung in matted clumps to its sickly thin frame.  It was almost as tall as me, but a giant hunched back rose above its head.  Strangely long legs sprouted out on either side of it in a spidery crouch.  Pointed ears pressed flat against its head and a long snout hovered over the forest floor.  Shriveled yellow eyes gazed hungrily at the ground in front of it and long yellow fangs poked out from under a cracked lip.

“What was that?” I whispered in horror, shaking from relief.

“That was a morg,” Ava replied grimly.

My FanFiction Stories - Post #1

I originally wrote this story for my brother Zach's 13th birthday. He was currently obsessed (and still is) with Wolverine, Batman, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. This story is about Obi-Wan… because Star Wars is awesome. It's a short story intended to be fun and a simple read. When I wrote it I was literally flying to try and get it done for his birthday -- I did, and I think I did a pretty good job. But I'll let you be the judge of that…

Description: Newly knighted Obi-Wan Kenobi is sent to the planet Nargossa to put an end to the murdering smuggler Hareim Cole.

Movie: Star Wars

Characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aurra Sing, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker.

Genre: Sci-Fi/Adventure

FantasyFreak133

I know you guys have seen my link to FanFiction on the Contacts page, but you probably don't really know what it is, who I am, or what I do on it. To sum it all up, it's basically a website where people can write stories based in a book or movie that they like without copyright infringement problems. It's a really fun site where you can both read and write. There are forums and fan clubs, polls and beta readers. And there are TONS of sections for books, movies, comics, TV shows (etc.) where you can find stories to read. If you want to write a story and the book/movie is not listed, then all you have to do is simply contact the FanFiction Help and they will add it for you!

I'm one of the readers/authors for this awesome website; my username is FantasyFreak133, and I currently have five stories posted for Star Wars, Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Young Samurai. Over the next few weeks I'll be writing an individual post for each of my FanFictions detailing what they're about and what gave me the idea. So keep your eyes peeled for those!

The ratings for FanFiction are:

I balanced a tray in either hand and on my head as I walked through the deserted halls to the banquet chamber.  I could hear the snarls, the clashes of metal, and the splashing of wine even from where I stood; a full story underground.

I teetered and almost lost my balance as a wiry figure shot past me. I glared at Alvord as he bounced to my side and caught my arm, righting me.

“Sorry Min!” he gasped, while the big torches in his hands flickered eerie shadows on the moldy walls.

“It’s all right.”

We hurried down the halls and stepped out from a tapestry on the wall and walked into the candle lit chamber.
