Teaser Tuesday - Post #15

Here's something new! Every Tuesday I'm going to share with you a picture that showcases a moment from my book, Jazmine. Below it, I'll have a quote that is related to the picture. Hopefully this way ya'll will be able to get inside my head a little and see what Latanica is really like! None of these images (unless otherwise noted) are mine.

From THE LATANICA SAGA: JAZMINE --

As I looked out into the horizon, a black dot caught my attention. I strained my eyes to try and see it clearly. After a while it got closer and I was able to see that it was a ship. It looked very old, but I noticed that it was well built.  But it was the ship’s flag that caught my attention. It was jet-black, with a red raven. It fluttered and waved in the wind.

A silver mirror shimmered into view beside her, the delicate glass rippling like a still lake.  She beckoned me to move toward her, but I stepped forward hesitantly.

I turned my head to take a quick peek in the mirror... and a strange girl stared back at me.

Thrust, block, sweep, duck, stab, parry, volley.  Over and over again we performed these moves like a rehearsed dance.  I felt like I was flying; weaving and ducking under and around Adrian’s sharp blade.

I looked down at my hands and visibly grimaced.  I still held the ivory handled dagger, and the goblin’s blood stained my hands and wrists, dried in clumps to my bare skin.  I looked up and noticed a clear blue spring bubbling merrily over a dam of boulders, so I walked over to it and sunk my hands into the cool silky wetness.  I watched as the blood fell from my hands and drifted in red-black swirls down the spring, carried by the gentle current.

“I have picked a rout traveling in the southern rapids. It is the fastest and surest way to get to Aceanus,” said Rex in an odd, throaty voice.

“Are you sure it’s safe?” I asked uncertainly.

“I have sailed it at least five times, Princess, and came out unharmed. I doubt this trip will be any different,” he replied sourly.

“If you don’t hurry up, slave, I’ll have Ax whip you so hard your grandchildren’s backs will bleed… if you live long enough to have some anyway,” she added, chuckling lightly as her unnerving eyes stared at me with a new bloodthirsty glint.

Dravia may be human, but sometimes she acted no less savage than the other monsters that roamed her father’s castle.

Another high-pitched giggle filled the air and suddenly, I was surrounded by hundreds of bright blinking lights.

I sat up and watched in astonishment as the tiny lights formed into hundreds of glowing little people with wings.

I only got a quick glance at the beast before it rushed past, but I could never forget what I saw. Grey hair clung in matted clumps to its sickly thin frame.  It was almost as tall as me, but a giant hunched back rose above its head.  Strangely long legs sprouted out on either side of it in a spidery crouch.  Pointed ears pressed flat against its head and a long snout hovered over the forest floor.  Shriveled yellow eyes gazed hungrily at the ground in front of it and long yellow fangs poked out from under a cracked lip.

“What was that?” I whispered in horror, shaking from relief.

“That was a morg,” Ava replied grimly.

Even though he couldn’t watch over me in the castle any longer, he had continued to watch over me through the spying of a talking raven.

I balanced a tray in either hand and on my head as I walked through the deserted halls to the banquet chamber.  I could hear the snarls, the clashes of metal, and the splashing of wine even from where I stood; a full story underground.

I teetered and almost lost my balance as a wiry figure shot past me. I glared at Alvord as he bounced to my side and caught my arm, righting me.

“Sorry Min!” he gasped, while the big torches in his hands flickered eerie shadows on the moldy walls.

“It’s all right.”

We hurried down the halls and stepped out from a tapestry on the wall and walked into the candle lit chamber.

After a few minutes we emerged into a small clearing.  In the center of the clearing was a decaying structure held up by four columns.

Cloaked in a blanket of hot fog, the craggy peaks of the mountains rose up like protective guardians over Tarius.  The dark shadow at its base stretched out behind us, covering the land that we had already traveled.  The air was deathly still, devoid of the life that belonged to the dawn of a new day.

I stuffed the coins in a pouch at my waist and bolted out the door into the freezing wind outside.  I was instantly chilled to the bone.  I pulled the shawl more closely around my shoulders and hurried to the gates leading outside of the castle.

It was a magnificent scene.  The clear turquoise water touched the sky, kissing it gently as if they were best friends.  The dying sun flashed its brilliant colors upon the water as if a million tiny diamonds were imbedded in the silky sheet of blue.  The gentle waves that caressed the beach were full of power, and the sunset outlaying the horizon was filled with more colors than I could name.

I wiped a sooty hand across my forehead and sighed as I climbed down from the ladder that I was standing on. I looked up to the hundreds of candles that I had just lit.  Malcus’ banquet hall was a giant room. Pillars of stone lined the walls as did tall windows and dozens of terrifying statues. I could see the sunset starting outside the window, bathing everything in a blood red light. It would be night soon, and then the banquet would start…
